Located 40 km from Kosovo and perched at an altitude of 1,000 m, this small mountain town occupies a superb natural site which in some ways reminds one of the Massif Central. Crossed by the river Ibar and surrounded by hills, it lies in one of the most wooded regions of the Balkans. The famous Rugovo Gorge, through which part of the Serbian army retreated during the winter of 1915-1916 towards Albania, lies just behind. Surrounded by unspoilt nature, Rožaje has everything to delight lovers of the great outdoors. History lovers will also be pleased, with its Turkish-style houses and two mosques.
