A border town, Berane has suffered from the vicissitudes of history. The present town was founded only in the second half of the 19th century. During the medieval period, the region of Berane was known as Budimlja and occupied a significant place in the religious, political and economic life of the first Serbian state, Rascia. St. Sava, the first Serbian bishop, founded one of the first Serbian bishoprics here in 1219 (Ðurđevi Stupovi Monastery). Between 1455 and 1912, Berane was occupied by the Turks, which caused many uprisings. Tourist asset, the ski resort Lokve has been redeveloped and remains the cheapest in the country.
