Bijelo Polje is the third largest city in the country, but also the cultural and administrative center of northern Montenegro. It benefits from a pleasant environment, fertile and rich in mineral water sources. Founded in the 12th century by the Serbian dynasty of the Nemanjids, the city occupies an important place in the cultural life of the Lim valley and the church of St. Peter becomes, in 1321, an episcopal residence. Occupied by the Turks in the 15th century, the city took the name of Akovo. Liberated only in 1912, Bijelo Polje experienced a boom in the 1980s with the arrival of the Belgrade-Bar railroad line.
