MONT KIILOPÄÄ
Located at the entrance to Urho Kekkonen National Park, just a few kilometers from Saariselkä, Mount Kiilopää offers the ultimate in Nordic wilderness activities. In summer and winter alike, this emblematic Lapland peak attracts travellers in search of gentle adventure and awe-inspiring scenery. At 546 meters above sea level, it's within easy walking distance of the center of Kiilopää. A short hike of around 2 km leads to the summit, where a spectacular panoramic view of the Lapland taiga opens up: boreal forests, lakes, rolling hills... A dream setting for photographers and lovers of wide open spaces. Up here, the only sound that disturbs the majestic silence of the taiga is the wind.
In winter, the region is transformed into a playground for winter sports enthusiasts. Cross-country skiing is king, with more than 200 km of trails through immaculate, silent landscapes. Snowshoeing enthusiasts will also find what they're looking for on the marked trails, for total immersion in the wilderness.
Finally, it's impossible to stay in Kiilopää without trying out the traditional savusauna, the Finnish smoke sauna. The experience is often followed by a bath in the nearby icy river: a shocking but invigorating thermal shock, according to a long-established custom.
Finally, thanks to its modest but unobstructed altitude, and the absence of light pollution, Mount Kiilopää is also one of the best viewing points for the northern lights in the Saariselkä region. Enjoy!
