Jämsä had a population of 20,109 in 2020. The "Wanha Witonen" canoe route, named after Finnish banknotes issued in 1909, runs through the entire Jämsä region from Petäjävesi to Lake Päijänne. The image of the lake on the old 5 FIM bill depicted the cape from Rasua to Jämsänkoski. The Himos ski resort is also one of the area's main attractions.
