Just 80 km north of Tampere, Ruovesi, a small town with a population of 4,500 (2016), is a beautiful village, and above all, very well situated between two lakes and on the edge of a national park. Here you can admire the house of Finland's most famous painter, Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931), the little church built in the 18th century and, above all, discover the Helvetinjärvi National Park, fish in the surrounding lakes and watch the bridges swing as boats pass by. Information (in Finnish) at www.ruovesi.fi. To reach Ruovesi by car, head north from Tampere towards Ylojärvi and Kuru (route 65 then 23).
