The town, founded in 1837 by Tsar Nicholas I, lies to the north of Lake Päijänne. Jyväskylä played a key role in the development of education and national culture. In 1858, at a time when Finnish was still regarded by the Swedishintelligentsia as the language of the peasants, the first Finnish-language high school opened its doors in the city.
