Founded in 1639, it is the country's oldest inland city. With 67,774 inhabitants (2020), Hämeenlinna is today the capital of the Häme region, less than 100 km from Helsinki. It is also home to the perfectly preserved medieval Häme Castle. It is also the birthplace of Finland's most famous composer, Sibelius. Two good reasons, therefore, to stop off in the area. Don't miss Market Square, surrounded by banks, stores, the town hall and the church built in 1798 by French architect Jean-Louis Desprez, attached to the court of Gustave III.
