Loviisa is a charming little fortified town and port, 90 km east of Helsinki on the road to St. Petersburg. Founded in 1745 to protect the eastern frontier of the Swedish kingdom, its name comes directly from the first name of the Swedish queen Lovisa Ulrika. In the 18th century, it was one of only three towns in Finland authorized to trade abroad. In the age of tall ships, Loviisa established itself as an important port. A popular watering place, it also attracted the Russian aristocracy. In the 19th century, architect Georg Chiewitz redesigned a neoclassical town center dominated by the church and town hall.
