Often considered a quick stop between Soldotna and Homer on the Sterling Highway to refuel, Ninilchik is worth a visit for its old Orthodox church. Its community of nearly 700 residents is one of the oldest on the peninsula. It was created when the Russian-American company settled here in 1820 alongside the Dena'ina (Athabascan), Aleut and Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) Inuit. Today, the descendants of this Russian-American mix form the core of the community, which spoke a dialect mixing Russian and Athabascan. The village is now popular for salmon and halibut fishing.
