Soldotna was born in the late 1940's when World War II veterans were given a piece of land to farm under the Homestead Act. Its location at the intersection of the Sterling Highway and the Kenai Highway made this town of 4,600 people an important commercial center. The Kenai River runs through the middle of the town. It was here that the largest salmon in the world was caught in 1987. A chinook of 42 kg! Since that day, this city attracts thousands of fishermen from all over the world, in search of such a trophy. It is also possible to raft down part of the river to observe the wildlife.
