Lake Zurich's main resort is also the first foray into the canton of St. Gallen for Zurich residents. Rapperswil-Jona was founded in 2007, when the municipalities of Rapperswil and Jona merged to form a community of 27,000 inhabitants. The town's charming historic center, with its craftsmen's stalls, pretty houses on the quayside and old stones dominated by a beautiful medieval castle, is the main reason for a trip around the lake. Rapperswil, whose coat of arms features two red roses, is nicknamed the "Rose City", and its flowers can be admired in public squares and in three rose gardens.
