Einsiedeln, some 30 km from Schwyz, is Switzerland's most important pilgrimage destination. The territorial abbey of Einsiedeln, a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Our Lady of the Hermits, is a major stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Its jewel, the "Black Madonna" of Einsiedeln, visible in the Gnadenkapelle, attracts almost a million pilgrims and tourists every year. Einsiedeln is also a paradise for walkers and nature lovers, with a gigantic network of hiking trails (almost 400 km). Einsiedeln is also home to atypical museums such as the Gingerbread Museum.
