Altdorf, the capital of the canton of Uri, lies in the lower Reuss valley, south of Lake Lucerne. This is the village of William Tell, Swiss hero if ever there was one! The town's emblem is an apple with an arrow through it. In the town center, the famous Tell monument, a tribute to the local and national hero, recalls the story of the founding of Switzerland.
