It is 40 km south of Kankan that you can discover the very famous city of Bissandougou. Capital of the Wassoulou Empire which extended from Guinea to the Upper Volta and from the rainforest to the Sahara, Bissandougou offers today some rare memories of this empire founded by Samory Touré and disappeared with him at the end of the 19th century, totally destroyed by the colonial troops. It was also the site of the signing of an important treaty between Samory and the French in 1887, redefining the boundaries between the French colonies and the Samory states, and granting them navigation rights on the Niger River.
