Kouroussa is the undisputed home of the djembe. The Dounounba or dance of the strong men is like an institution, practiced during all the local festivals. It is also the birthplace of the beloved writer of Guinea, Camara Laye, whose house can still be seen near the old train station. Kouroussa has been in serious decline until recently, but it is of renewed interest because of its gold deposits.
