Kouroussa is the undisputed home of the djembe. The Dounounba or dance of the strong men is like an institution, practiced during all the local festivals. It is also the birthplace of the beloved writer of Guinea, Camara Laye, whose house can still be seen near the old train station. Kouroussa has been in serious decline until recently, but it is of renewed interest because of its gold deposits. So much so that some have spoken of a gold rush in this Guinean Wild West, where artisanal and somewhat anarchic mining has developed strongly in recent years after the departure of Cassidy Gold Guinea SA.
