Located on the Milo River, Nabaya (named after its founder Baté Nabaya) was founded by the Konde (animists) in the 17th century. One hundred years later, they were driven back 11 km by the Kaba. Conquered by Samory Touré in 1879, Kankan was occupied by France in 1891. This city was made famous by its craftsmen, the Sidimé of Kakandé origin, the greatest sculptors in West Africa. In the city, a large number of huts still exist; it is a pride for a Malinke to preserve his tradition. The city is also home to some amazing cheese trees, whose branches are covered with bats. If you see chairs arranged in a circle surrounding musicians and women in large boubou dancing in the middle, don't doubt: it's a Mamaya.
