Kerouané is a small, quiet town surrounded by mountains, which makes it an excellent starting point for walking tours. The city, whose name means "chair of happiness" in Malinké, was founded by the Camara clan and made famous by Samory Touré, who had set up his capital a little further north at Bissandougou. Samory, in his struggle against the French, had to leave the region in 1892 to go into exile near Siguiri, before being arrested by the colonists and deported in 1898. But he left his mark on the history of the region and more widely of the country. It is a pity that the rare vestiges of this glorious past are so little highlighted.
