The eastern Sudetenland is a riotous region. Around the town of Kłodzko, hills, forests, rivers, mineral springs, and deep valleys form a charming, rural, and rather wild region, untouched by industrialization outside Kłodzko. The Ziemia Kłodzka, "land of Kłodzko," is prized by Poles as it was by Prussians in the 19th century, for its impressive number of spa towns.Rarely in Poland, Kłodzko has preserved its medieval structure very well. Situated on a hill above the Nysa Kłodzka valley, at the foot of an impressive fortress, it has several interesting monuments and has the appearance of an authentic Sudeten town. It is the most beautiful town in the region, if not really touristy, competing with the nearby spas. Surrounded by a few factories and neglected working-class neighborhoods, its pedestrianized old town could be an attraction, with its network of underground passages, a valuable church, its gothic bridge, its stairways and of course its fortress. One thing is for sure though, this is culturally the most interesting visit in the eastern Sudetenland, before going to the nature or spa towns. It can also be a good day trip from Wrocław. Kłodzko was one of the oldest towns founded in Silesia. It was in turn Bohemian, Austrian and Prussian, guarding the trade route between Prague and Breslau
