Popielno, a village 11 km southeast of Mikołajski, boasts a reserve of tarpans, an ancient breed of horse, ancestors of the domestic horse, that came all the way from the Americas via the frozen (before it melted) shores of the Bering Strait. Very rare today, this breed was reintroduced to Poland after the Second World War. These animals are maintained with great care, to ensure the protection of their species. The site also boasts a deer farm that is well worth a visit. These are actually part of the nearby research center, whose staff are always willing to talk to visitors.
