With its 30,000 inhabitants, Giżycko is one of the largest towns in Masuria and a major tourist center. This is due more to the activities on offer on the surrounding lakes and in the forests than to the charm of the town, itself situated on the magnificent Lake Niegocin. The influx of tourists in summer has turned it into a veritable vacation and leisure resort, with plenty of accommodation and restaurants. If you're mainly interested in the towns, you'll want to pass through quickly; if you've come for the lakes and forests, you'll want to stay. Every year, in mid-July, the town hosts a festival of sea chanteys.
