On the western edge of the city, this enormous star-shaped fortress was built in the mid-19th century by the Prussian Minister of War, Hermann von Boyen, to control the border with Russia. Fort Boyen survived the fighting of both world wars unscathed, so the building is perfectly preserved. Today, the fortress and its war museum are open to the public, and in summer, the moat hosts numerous concerts and festivals.
