Ocotal is another town of historic importance. General Auguste César Sandino defeated the Americans (and the National Guard) in 1927 in an epic siege, where he used for the first time the guerrilla tactics (the aircraft of the navies destroyed the city).You will be able to bask in the very beautiful tropical place, before visiting the Cultural Centre which displays works by local artists and also houses the municipal library. Sandino had established its headquarters in these same buildings. A few kilometres from Ocotal (bus by bus in 1 hour 30), the village of Ciudad Antigua (formerly called Nueva Segovia) has the oldest church in Nicaragua; outside, nice stone performances of boats traveling on the Coco.
