The 11 000 hectares of the Los Macizos nature reserve of Peñas Blancas are part of the large natural reserve of Bosawás, declared natural biosphere by UNESCO in 1997. It is a natural border separating the departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega. It is located 70 km north of Matagalpa and includes one of the highest mountains in the country at 1 745 metres. Composed of dense tropical rainforests and clouds, the reserve remains very poorly explored. It starts to register gradually on the travel route for ecotourism enthusiasts. The area is inhabited by many small farms, including coffee and cocoa plantations.
