With its 1 280 m altitude, the Momotombo Volcano is one of the symbols of Nicaragua. The last eruption occurred in 1905. The crater is now buried, but persistent fumaroles and the eternal smoke plume remind us that the land-based forces are still active there.A geothermal plant was installed at the foot of the volcano to use the energy of its vapours. It is possible to make the climb (check with service providers in León for example). The top panorama is breathtaking (really). You can also win Puerto Momotombo (where the ruins of León Viejo are located) and hire a local guide.
