The site (inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000) is not fantastic in itself, but the Momotombo Volcano and the lake in the background make up a picturesque landscape; magnificent panoramas from a natural vantage point that we win at the rear of Calle Real, where the modest ruins of residences or churches of the first site of León, founded in 1524 by Captain Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, are sown. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the site was inhabited by the Nagrandanos-Chopotegas, a matriarchal people descended from the Aztecs of Mexico. He has only been inhabited by settlers for 186 years. Following the assassination of Fray Antonio de Valdivieso (murder sponsored by the governor who did not like the priest criticizing the power in place), Leon Viejo's inhabitants believe in a curse on the city. The earthquake of 1710 ends to discourage the most resilient. The remains of Pedrarías Dávila and Córdoba were recently found. Remember that Dávila accused Córdoba of treason and executed it: the body of the latter was deposited alongside his murderer as a sign of curse and eternal torment. He also discovered the graves of the three dead priests on the ground, the last in tragic conditions. Note that only one quarter of the site has been excavated to date.
