The archipelago of Zapatera (a large island and 10 small satellite islands), which is 625 m high, is located 40 km south of Granada. It is reached in one hour's boat from Puerto Asese. Count US $ 200 per day for a boat. The island is famous for the many archaeological remains that have been brought to the fore: some zoomorphes sculptures (human body and animal head) on stone (carved by the Chorotega) are now displayed in the museum adjoining the church of San Francisco in Granada (others can be observed in Washington, if the heart tells you). The Isla del Muerto (the island of death, charming programme) has countless petroglyphs, the most famous of which are engraved on a huge stone 95 m high and 25 m wide! The island was probably a ceremonial centre (funerals, sacrifices…).The archipelago was perhaps an important religious centre before the arrival of the conquistadors. Archaeologists believe that he was inhabited between 500 before and 1500 after J.-C; The main island was then called Xomotename ("duck village") or Mazagalpan ("maisons houses").You can also visit a lake on the north-west side of the main island.
