Lak Xao literally means "km 20" but the village is located 33 km from the Vietnamese border. The road that leads to this village of 400 inhabitants crosses several ethnic villages (Hmong Kao, Hmong Lay, Thai Men). The main resource comes from the exploitation of wood. A few kilometers from Lak Xao, there are the caves of Mong Khon where the resistance fighters took refuge during the war of independence. The city is especially famous for the battle that took place between November 1963 and January 1964. The rare hotels are of a summary comfort. There are of course some noodle shops. Continuing towards the Vietnamese border, one can visit the former French military base of Ban Napé and make a stop at the hot springs located nearby.
