This former French colonial city of about 85,000 inhabitants is the capital of Khammouane province. It faces the town of Nakhon Phanom, in north-eastern Thailand, on the other side of the Mekong River, with which it has trade relations. The past is gradually fading away with the new economic development of the region due mainly to the trade established between Vietnam and Thailand. Work on the third Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge was completed in 2012. On the banks of the Mekong, some streets still bear the imprint of the French presence, particularly around the Fountain Square, where a certain old-fashioned charm remains.
