The town of Son Tây gained international renown for the raid carried out on November 21, 1970, to free American prisoners of war held in a camp. Operation Kingpin involved 105 aircraft and was led by a group of 56 Green Berets. The operation failed to achieve its objective, as the prisoners had previously been transferred to another camp. Son Tây also boasts a number of historical relics, including a citadel built in 1822 during the reign of Minh Mang (Nguyên dynasty). Between 1870 and 1880, it was a major site of resistance against the French, who finally captured the place in 1883.
