Nakhon Phanom is a small provincial town in the very east of the country, on the Mekong River which forms the border with Laos. Nakhon Phanom is a very quiet town, with fewer than 30,000 inhabitants, well away from the tourist hustle and bustle... Its only attraction is the "Festival of the Illuminated Boats", which marks the end of Buddhist Lent (last full moon in October). Rest assured, there's no risk of traffic jams here, and no (or very few) Westerners. The region will appeal to nature lovers. The city is surrounded by hills where you can enjoy beautiful excursions on the banks of the Mekong River.
