About 170 km north of Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan is a small town of about 180,000 inhabitants, quite isolated, but very pleasant to visit, even without having any major monuments. Separated from Laos by the Mekong River, this city is a melting pot of Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and even Chinese peoples, which constitutes its discreet charm. The main attractions are the 65 m high observation tower, Ho Kaeo Mukhdahan, and the Indochinese market installed on the banks of the river. Since 2006, it is possible to reach Savannakhet from the Laotian side, thanks to the second Friendship Bridge (the first one is located north of the Isaan).
