Situated 90 km from Khon Kaen, this provincial town is best known for the manufacture of "khenes", typical Isaan musical instruments (a kind of large panpipes whose distinctive sound still accompanies local folk dances). A stopover in Roi Et is an opportunity to buy locally-made cotton or silk clothing, always of good quality and less expensive than in other major cities. The town center is organized around an artificial lake (with an island, accessed by various bridges). This is the usual stroll for the locals. Buses depart from Bangkok between 4 and 11 p.m.
