Altaussee nestles at the foot of the Totes Gebirge (Massif Mort) at an altitude of 730 m, on the shores of a beautiful mountain lake. Like its big sister, Bad Aussee, and the entire Totes Gebirge region in the heart of the northern Pre-Alps, Altaussee is part of the Styrian Salzkammergut, a UNESCO-listed area of outstanding natural beauty. Here you're at the foot of Trisselwand (1,755 m) and Loser (1,838 m). It's easy to climb to the summit of Loser, where you'll find a cosy mountain hut with views of the lake, neighbouring peaks and the Traun valley. The Loser Alm restaurant (1,600 m) offers good home cooking in a rustic atmosphere. Skiing on the Loser.
