In the north of the region, close to Burgenland, Hartberg has a very beautiful old centre with, at its highest point, a Renaissance castle built in 1572 by the Paar family. Its graceful arcaded gallery was added in the 17th century. Today the castle is a municipal building and has been converted into a cultural and educational centre. Not far away, the 15th century Gothic St. Anne's Church is a place of pilgrimage beautifully situated at the foot of the Pöllauberg. From here there is a wonderful view of the surrounding area and, on a clear day, of Hungary. In Löffelbach, 3 km from the centre, you can see the remains of the Villa Rustica, an ancient Roman settlement.
