14 km west of Klagenfurt, it is the most popular holiday resort on the southern shore of the Wörthersee. The village is beautifully situated, partly built on a rocky peninsula overlooking the lake. The village is named after its beautiful baroque parish church (Pfarrkirche) with Romanesque elements. The church stands on a promontory surrounded by a green cemetery like a figurehead. Maria Wörth is a place of peace, serenity and beauty, as if set in the heart of the lake. The composer Gustav Malher had built a holiday home nearby to recharge his batteries and compose.
