On the south bank of the Danube, at the confluence of the Erlauf River, Pöchlarn, birthplace of Oskar Kokoschka, is one of the main towns in the Nibelungengau, and is home to an interesting regional museum, housed in the Welserturm (1484). Visited on Saturday mornings, you'll find an exhibition of regional relics dating from Roman times to the present day. There are also temporary exhibitions. Until 2002, a ferry linked Klein-Pöchlarn to the other side of the Danube. A bridge now crosses the river. The area is known for its serpentine deposits, which have been mined for over six millennia.
