Špania Dolina is a beautiful little village located in the hills 13 km from Banská Bystrica, on the right hand side towards Ružomberok. It used to be a place of copper and silver mining and prospered in the 15th and 16th centuries when it traded with the Portuguese and Spanish empires. Although it gradually fell into disuse with the closure of the mines, it still has a unique charm, with its pretty 16th century church, accessible by an impressive wooden staircase, and its main square, with its monument made up of numerous automatons that describe the work of the miners. This small picturesque village is worth a visit
