This region, which stretches between Carlisle and Lancaster, is the far north of England and the entrance to Scotland. Hadrian's wall is the limit, built about 2 000 years ago to mark the delimitation of the Roman Empire and protect it from barbarian tribes in Scotland. He crosses England between Carlisle and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. South of Carlisle is Lake District, the most beautiful and visited area in Cumbria. Its sumptuous lakes are lined with snow-capped mountains between which are charming villages. Lake Windermere is its heart.
