This is the main entrance point of the Lake District, on the shores of Lake Windermere, the largest in England. The two cities bordering the banks have been baptized with little imagination: Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere, often abridged Bowness. They ended up joining with the expansion of tourism and the arrival of the train in 1847. They bring together some 11 000 inhabitants and form a major pole of the park's activity, which is very popular in summer.
