A former spa town since 1716, Cheltenham lies close to the Cotswolds and is reminiscent in some respects of the more provincial city of Bath. In fact, it forms a large urban area with its neighbor Gloucester, just a few kilometers to the south. George III, the Duke of Wellington, the future Queen Victoria, Lord Byron and Charles Dickens all took the waters here. The atmosphere is calm, but several festivals are held here every year: one for jazz, one for science, one for music and one for literature, which is very popular. The Regency style of architecture is elegant, and there are 2,000 listed buildings.
