Capital of Devon, Exeter is a friendly place. It has a pleasant, lively city center and a fine heritage. Built by the Celts, it was successively occupied by Romans and Saxons, before being attacked by Vikings and Danes. The ruins of the Roman city walls are still visible, and are now part of the historic center. During the Second World War, the town was again partly demolished by German air raids. The cathedral, however, suffered little damage and, unlike other cities that suffered the same fate, the rebuilds were carried out in harmony.
