Founded by the Romans, Dorchester consists mainly of Georgian buildings, the city having been destroyed in several fires in the 17th and 18th centuries. The famous novelist and poet Thomas Hardy lived here and all his works are set in the southwest of England, which he called Wessex, after the former Anglo-Saxon kingdom. You can visit the Dorset County Museum. Here you can find valuable prehistoric remains as well as some very good visits, including Maiden Castle and the Tutankhamun Museum. Add to this two or three good restaurants and hotels, and you've got a great stay!
