Forming a vast urban area of 1.5 million inhabitants with Portsmouth and its neighbors, Southampton is an industrial city that suffered greatly from Luftwaffe bombing raids. Only a few buildings, part of the city wall and the Bargate were spared. These are the only remnants of the medieval era, and the 1950s reconstruction focused on concrete. Set in a vast estuary, its port was one of the most active in British history, both commercially and militarily. Henry V set sail from here in 1415 for the Battle of Azincourt, and it was also the point of departure for the Mayflower and the Titanic.
