San José de Maracay de Tapa was born in 1701. His younger cathedral was born in 1743. It is the expansion of the indigo that will revolutionise this village of huts in the middle of the th century when its lands produce a million pounds of indigo each year. Attracted by the harvests, royalist will provide the necessary workforce for the city to become one of the most successful agricultural centres in the country (coffee, cotton, cocoa…). Finally, if the city holds its name from Cacique Maracay, head of the Aragua tribe, it is another leader, the horror dictator Juan Vincente Gómez, who leaves his mark, settling in 1902. During his «reign» at the head of Venezuela until 1935, the city became another capital. In addition to the largest place in Bolívar in South America (with a equestrian statue identical to that in Caracas), the city owes Gómez the military aviation school and arenas, in particular. All tunnels under the city lead to its old house located in the zoo. The main feature of Maracay, however, is its majestic Avenue Las Delicias which, bordered by large trees, crosses the north-south axis of this city whose economy lies in its military bases - it is, incidentally, the last coup d'état in the country. - and its fertile valleys. So say that Maracay is not much visited by tourists, who pass there only on the path of the national park Pittier or Choroni, for example. The city is not frankly unpleasant and, unlike Caracas, Maracay has no slums on heights: because, here, the creation of the Pittier National Park protected the peripheral mountains of any illegal construction. The rich villas, they have invested the old haciendas.
