A fortress city in the shape of a nine-pointed star, built in 1593 by the Venetians to protect Udine from the Turkish and Austrian threat, Palmanova offers a remarkable example of a fortified city of the modern era: there are no longer towers and crenellated walls, but redoubts and counterscarps, in order to take into account the firearms and cannons. Three monumental gates (Aquileia, Cividale and Udine) give access to the city center, up to the square of arms, the Piazza Grande.
