The locals mischievously confide: "Everyone wants to live in Karlskrona in the summer and in Stockholm in the winter. The city is indeed, like its northern sister, built on water, and has a distinctly Scandinavian beauty, a provincial calm and a delightful southern flavour. Karlskrona is a must-see because it is unique. Listed as a World Heritage Site in 1998, this city built on an island located one kilometre from the mainland is a joy to discover if the sun lets the colours of the water play with the pastel facades.Unesco wanted to highlight the islands of Stumholmen, Björkholmen and Trossö, the town centre, and the old strongholds (Kungsholm, Drottningskär, Kurrholmen, Koholmen, Godnatt) in the surrounding area. The latter originated in the fact that Karlskrona was founded in 1680 by order of King Charles XI, who was looking for a protected natural harbour for his Baltic Sea fleet, located in the south and free of ice in winter. Stortorget, one of the largest squares in Europe, has two churches, one of which is the beautiful, rounded Holy Trinity. The entire archipelago is worth a visit and there are many excursions from Fisktorget, the fish market.
