Kalmar is an obligatory stopover for those who wish to take the bridge to the island of Öland, but this small coastal city is well worth a stop, at least for its castle. Divided in two parts (old town in the west and more modern center in the east), the city offers many cultural attractions (its castle, but also the museum of the Region and the museum of Fine Arts) and a lovely heart with roughly paved streets. The imposing cathedral with its yellow walls, some old buildings on Storgatan and the remains of the ramparts that protected the city remind us of the days when Kalmar was fortified, the fragile border between the kingdoms of Sweden and Denmark. Larmtorget Square also has its own charm with the colorful animation and the gentle way of life that is revealed in summer. It is good to stroll here and there, towards the wooden houses of Gamla Stan, to hang out on the port or on the lawns surrounding the castle, to drink a coffee in the remains of the ramparts, before taking the bridge which connects the city to this spit of land which blocks the horizon, the island of Öland.
