At the foot of the Atacora mountain range, the commune of Kouandé is the historical center of the Bariba people, who have lived in the region since the 18th century. Kouandé was founded by a certain Worou Wari, the son of a Bariba prince driven out of the city of Nikki (which explains the attachment of the inhabitants to the celebration of the Gaani festival, which comes from the city of Nikki). The kingdom of Kouandé dominated practically all the peoples of the Atacora region. When the French occupied the city of Kouandé, the last king, Worou Wari II, was driven out of his city by the invaders and poisoned himself to end his ordeal
