The third commercial center of the country after Cotonou and Parakou, Djougou is an ancient stopover on the kola road that ran from present-day Ghana to Nigeria. Coveted by the French and the Germans who had each set up their post there, the city finally came under French control in 1897. Djougou took advantage of its location as a caravan crossroads to become an important trading center where Dendi, Hausa and Yoruba merchants now live side by side. One sometimes meets in Djougou and its surroundings men who, like the king, wear particular scarifications, very fine and numerous, going from the top of the head to the chin. These men are Penzé, from the princely ethnic group of Djougou.
